How SnoutScan scores dog food and treats

Toxic ingredients like chocolate, xylitol or grapes mean an automatic 0. Everything else is scored out of 100 on five rules worth 20 points each.

  • Named protein first: a real meat or fish leads the list.
  • Low salt: salt sits near the end of the list.
  • Clean preservatives: natural ones, not BHA, BHT or nitrites.
  • No added colors: dyes only cost points.
  • Low filler: few grains, potatoes or legumes up top.

Garlic and added sugar cost extra points. This is a guide to the ingredient list, not a substitute for your vet.
